어거스틴의 하나님께 대한 사랑의 고백

"내가 이해할 수 없는 신비가 하나 있습니다. 내가 하나님이라면 나는 이 지구에 살고 있는 모든 인간들을 다 박살을 내 버리고 말았을 것입니다. 그런데 하나님께서는 마땅히 저주하시고 심판하셔야 할 모든 인간들을 저주하지 아니하시고 불쌍히 여기셨습니다.
더욱 놀라운 것은 하나님이 나를 사랑하신다는 사실입니다. 하나님은 모두를 사랑하시되, 우리 한 사람 한 사람을 마치 세계에서 가장 사랑해야 할 사람이나 한 사람 밖에는 없는 것처럼 사랑해 주셨습니다. 만약 내가 지구상에 유일하게 생존하는 인간이라 할지라도 그리스도께서는 여전히 나를 위하여 죽기를 기뻐하셨을 것입니다."
